Over the years, a number of memorable World Cup semi-finals have taken place. In the last World Cup played in 2018, England and Croatia’s semi-final clash was one of the highlights of the tournament. In that game, England had taken the lead inside five minutes through a free kick by Kieran Tripper. However, Croatia’s Ivan Perisic equalised in the 68th minute before Mario Mandzukic scored the inner deep in extra time to break the English hearts.

However, that game fades in comparison to the famous 7-1 mauling Brazil suffered at the hands of Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final. The Germans were at their ruthless best in that game, pounding the Brazil goal with attack after attack. They took the lead in the 11th minute through Thomas Muller, before Miroslav Klose netted in the 23rd, Tony Kroos in 24th and 26th, Sami Khedira in the 29th and Andre Schurrle in the 69th and 79th minutes. Oscar got a consolation in the 90th for Brazil, for whom it was by far the worst defeat of their history – not just in a World Cup but in all competitions.

Germany have been one of the most successful teams in World Cups with four wins but their record could have been even better, had they not been knocked out five times in semi-finals stages of the World Cup. Their five semi-finals losses are more than anyone else has suffered at this stage.

On the other hand, Argentina are brilliant in World Cup semi-finals, having played five times but never been defeated.
