Teams Status

India return to home comfort after the humiliating tour of South Africa where they lost both the Test and ODI series, winning just a single game (1st Test) across six matches against a side thought of as the weaker of the two units.

Facing West Indies in the comfort of home could offer them the perfect tonic to feel good about themselves.

This game will officially see the start of Rohit Sharma era in India’s ODI cricket, with Virat Kohli having been sacked late last year. Sharma had skipped the South Africa tour.

Ahead of the series, India were hit by a Covid outbreak, which means Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Navdeep Saini (standby player) are all out. Mayank Agarwal has been drafted in as replacement.

West Indies

West Indies are coming off of a morale boosting 3-2 win over England in a home T20I series. While that was impressive, playing India in India is a different ball game altogether, especially when the format is 50 overs and not 20, to which the Windies are better suited.

The series is of importance as the next 50-over World Cup is in India next year and the Caribbean boys could use this opportunity to figure what works and what doesn’t for them.

A good news for Windies faithful is that their pacer Kemar Roach is back in the ODI side for the first time since August 2019. He isn’t as quick as he used to be but would still strengthen the tourists’ bowling unit.
